“More? You want More?”…
…Then you had better get yourselves along to Dee & Alyn’s summer production of Lionel Bart’s Oliver!, based on Charles Dickens’ rags to riches, classic Oliver Twist.
Beginning in the parish workhouse, Oliver and the orphans, watch in envy as Food, Glorious Food is served up to the gentry, whilst they are forced to exist on meagre rations of watery gruel. When Oliver dares to ask for more, he gets much more than he bargained for…
Sold, by Mr Bumble the Beadle, to local undertaker, Mr Sowerberry, Oliver is mercilessly bullied, and after contemplating Where is Love, resolves to run away to London.
His first encounter is with a young rogue, the Artful Dodger, who invites Oliver to Consider Yourself as one of the family. The family in question inhabit a thieves’ kitchen, under the dubious guidance of Fagin, the ever watchful eye of Bill Sykes and his long suffering girlfriend, Nancy. They are all, including Oliver, expected to Pick a Pocket or Two.
