"Do you think you could say a few words about your sister this evening? I can't manage it. I'll stand there blubbing."
"Actually, I've written something."
"Have you? Well done. You're wonderful, son. Wonderful."
From the very opening moments of Festen (The Celebration) there is a sense of momentous events. A father is celebrating his 60th birthday with a formal dinner. At his large country home Helge, a successful restaurateur, is surrounded by his wife Else, their close-knit family – Christian, Helene and Michael - friends and household staff.
But there is tension in the air and when Christian, the eldest son, rises to propose the first toast he makes a devastating accusation against his father.
As the party continues relationships are changed forever in a gripping psychological drama which exposes a family's darkest secrets.
Festen, based on the Danish Dogme film, is provocative and moving – electrifying theatre which raises the most profound questions about family and society.
