One of the great films to come out of French cinema, this is a poetic examination of a tortured lover. Francois (Jean Gabin) is a factory worker in 1930s France who, having shot a man dead in his garret flat, ponders the preceding events whilst waiting for the inevitable arrival of the gendarmerie.
