THE CHERRY ORCHARD
By Anton Chekhov
A new version by Mike Poulton
Director Terry Hands
Designer Johan Engels
Composer Colin Towns
"I was born here - my father and mother grew up here - my grandfather - I love this house. Without the cherry orchard my life no longer makes sense. If it really has to be sold then uproot me along with it - sell me too."
Abandoned by her lover and penniless, Madame Ranevskaya returns from Paris to her family home. But the estate is in crisis. The cherry orchard no longer provides an income and without money to even feed the servants, the family is facing bankruptcy.
The old world is changing. Serfdom has gone and a new business class has new wealth; the town is growing and the railway encroaching into the countryside.
The historic orchard – beautiful, unproductive and ripe for the axe – symbolises the destiny of the family.
The Cherry Orchard, a poignant comedy of changing times, is Chekhov’s last and greatest play.
