Vienna is morally out of control. The Duke appoints his deputy Angelo to restore order and virtue. Angelo reinstates an ancient law banning sex outside marriage. The young Claudio, whose fiancè is pregnant, is condemned to death. His sister Isabella, soon to take her final vows to become a nun, pleads with Lord Angelo for her brother's life. Her purity so excites Angelo, that he offers Isabella a monstrous bargain - he will save Claudio's life if Isabella will yield her virginity to him that night.
Some of Shakespeare's most memorable characters take us on a journey from the rarefied nunneries to the seedy bordellos of Vienna with a mix of heart stopping drama and bawdy comedy in this most problematic of Shakespeare's 'problem plays'.
Directed by Phillip Breen, whose recent work for Clwyd Theatr Cymru includes Two Princes by Meredydd Barker, Suddenly Last Summer by Tennessee Williams and The Birthday Party by Harold Pinter.
